Elise Go, Lonelier with You Review
Elise Go is a pop singer and songwriter from San Francisco, California that recently graduated cum laude from Berklee College of Music with a BA in Songwriting. She is also a classically trained pianist from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Her music is influenced by R&B/Soul artists of yesteryear along with modern-day Pop. Go was the 2nd place winner of ETTV Top Idol at age sixteen and was presented the Spirit Award by Distinguished Young Women of California. She also was awarded 7th place in Million Star, a reality TV show in Taiwan. While attending Berklee, she performed in various shows at the Berklee Performance Center, Boston Symphony Hall, Boston College, Boston University, and other venues. She was the opening act for international Chinese Pop superstar Lee Hom Wang in November 2016. Go was selected as a soloist to perform at the Berklee Commencement Concert for the Class of 2017. In recognition of her outstanding musicianship, Go was awarded a Berklee Songwriting Achievement Scholarship. Her debut single, “Demon,” was awarded West Coast Songwriters July Song of the Month. Another one of her originals, “Always On My Mind,” received an Honorable Mention in West Coast Songwriters’ International Song Contest. The LA-based singer and songwriter now returns with her latest progressive pop single titled “Lonelier with You.”
Bottom Line: In 2020, she plans to release her debut EP, and she is delving into a new medium: production – with all tracks produced or co-produced by the artist herself. Collaborators include Benji Cormack (slenderbodies) and Johannes Gritschacher, Olivia O’Brien’s drummer. “Lonelier with You” has a solid flow with a dark, intense pop aesthetic while maintaining an introspective groove throughout. Go describes the song, “Lonelier With You is quite a departure from my previous singles. It’s a dark dance-pop track that incorporates lush synths, funky guitars, and Asian pentatonic melodies that takes you on a personal journey to the middle of heartbreak. Often, we get so caught up in wanting to be with someone, we don’t realize that when we’re with them, they actually make us feel more lonely than we were in the first place.” Go’s melodious vocals sing the melody with style and rhythmic energy with finger snaps and a full synth pad. The production is solid, with all the instruments and vocals living together in the stereo stage in a balanced manner. The bridge is a hip feel change that builds back to the groove. Go has a firm grasp of songwriting, and her singing is technically fluid and emotional. The last chorus features beautiful vocal fills and shows Go’s impressive vocal chops.
