Josh Turner, Country State of Mind Review
Josh Turner is a multi-platinum MCA Nashville recording artist and one of country music’s most recognizable hit-makers. He has taken the banner of traditional country and worn it with his rich, deep voice and distinctive style. Turner has sold more than 12.5 million albums and is one of the youngest members of the esteemed Grand Ole Opry. Starting with his 2003 platinum-selling debut Long Black Train, Turner has garnered multiple GRAMMY, CMA, and ACM nominations. Turner’s now releasing his eighth studio album titled Country State of Mind. The twelve songs on the album highlight some of Turner’s favorite Country Classics, and features guest appearances from John Anderson, Kris Kristofferson, Chris Janson, Runaway June, Maddie & Tae, and the legendary Randy Travis.
Bottom Line: Country State of Mind is Turner adding his unique style to country music covers. Songs covered are Vern Gosdin’s “I Can Tell By the Way You Dance (You’re Gonna Love Me Tonight),” Johnny Cash’s “The Caretaker,” and Hank Williams’ “Alone and Forsaken” and the title track. Kris Kristofferson and John Anderson join Turner on their songs: “Why Me” and “I’ve Got It Made.” Members of Runaway June sing George Jones’ part on “You Don’t Seem to Miss Me” and Randy Travis’ “Forever and Ever, Amen.” George Strait’s 2004 single “Desperately,” features the vocal talents of Maddie & Tae. If you are a classic country fan, you will love Country State of Mind. Turner’s singing and the guest artists bring these songs a new perspective without destroying the song’s original charm. There are multiple standouts on the album, starting with the opening track “I’m No Stranger To The Rain.” This track is just Turner singing at his best, his low resonate voice fills the airwaves with a powerful sound that is all country. “Forever And Ever, Amen” is an excellent cover by Turner; his voice is very similar to Randy Travis’, and both sound amazing Travis’ ending amen is very lovely. “Desperately” featuring Maddie & Tae is a fun track. The male/female vocal harmonies are beautiful. Turner has a gift to make everything sound like classic country, and that is why we love him. That’s the short of it!Connect with Josh Turner: Website |
