Charlotte Lansman, The Cage Review
Charlotte Lansman is a London based Bristol-born singer with a beautiful contralto voice that is taking influence from the world of jazz and soul to create music that is moving and profound with feeling. Her contralto tones and her poetic lyrics are paired with solid songwriting skills. Lansman’s catalog is growing as she is a new and unique voice on the UK music scene. Lansman’s first single caught our hears, and we have been a fan ever since. She is now releasing her fourth single, “The Cage.”
“The Cage” has rich horns and a hip R&B feel that drives the pulse for Lansman’s vocals. Lansman explains, “The song is inspired by how easy it is to create habits in relationships that we later resent or struggle with. And how the relationships that we watch and learn from in our early lives can often dictate who we end up partnering with, even if we don’t recognize it at first. Our lives are a product of our own choices, but those choices are harnessed by what we came to know as normal in childhood. Nevertheless, they’re still our choices!” The strings and horn sounds add depth to the music as the song evolves through the form. A quiet and reflective bridge allows the last chorus to shine with its multiple counterpoints, full backing vocals, and hip horn and string lines. Lansman’s contralto tones and thoughtful lyrics will put a spell on you, and that’s the short of it!
