Discrete, Explore Review
Discrete, aka August Ramberg, is a twenty-three-year-old DJ, producer, and musician that was born and raised in Stockholm, Sweden. His sound pushes the frontiers of dance music to deliver an imaginative musical experience. Discrete’s debut single “WITHOUT YOU” was a captivating song with intense energy. Discrete finds inspiration in a wide range of sounds, from ska to J-Pop. His first two singles garnered some 35 million plays across all platforms. His single “Trippin’ Bout You,” jumped into high-octane house, where Discrete espouses classic dance synths with pop earnestness. His impressive catalog of music has grown over the years and is not hitting over 65 million plays across all platforms. Discrete has produced songs for many artists across the board, while still focusing on his own musical experiments and craft. Discrete says: “As an artist, I always aim for growth, and want to stay away from focusing on one particular genre. People have always told me to ‘find my sound’ which is something that I like to keep in mind. I like the thought of my audience not knowing what to expect when I release music.” Discrete is now releasing a five-song EP titled, Explore.
Positives: Excellent selection of feels and guest artist all wrapped in solid production. Bottom Line: Explore features five tracks that have a wide range of sounds. The music weaves dance-pop versatility through relatable modern themes, including relationships, reflections, and bettering oneself. Full of uplifting, splash-filled melodies that are all a part of Discrete’s vision. Discrete explains: “It was in mid-2019 when the idea of an EP came to mind. I wanted to build and create something that felt like me. Something that had diversity, instead of releasing five songs that sound similar. EXPLORE became my own way of exploring different genres, whilst challenging myself as an artist, songwriter, and producer. I’m really excited with the final result.” The opening track is “Feed Me With Love,” which is custom-built for the dancefloor. For this one, the producer teams up with Charla K to create a song with the perfect ebb and flow and solid vocals. “Typo” features vocalist Tudor and Victoria Voss. The duet cleverly narrates a two-way feud between ex-lovers through a soft indie-pop setting. Discrete’s sounds are full and focus on groove and danceability. Another standout number is “Better Days,” which is a collaboration with lifelong friend Chris Collins. With 80s inspired synths and a solid pop overtone, the song focuses on the struggles and pain caused by long-distance relationships. Discrete is exploring a serious dance sound with a hip blend of electro-pop, dance, and EDM’s many sub-genres on Explore. That’s the short of it!
