Thibault Cauvin, Thibault Cauvin Plays Leo Brouwer Review
Thibault Cauvin is a prodigy of the classical guitar at just 27 years old. The young virtuoso was born into a musical family and began studying guitar when he was six years old with his father, the acclaimed guitarist/composer, Philippe Cauvin. After studying at the Bordeaux Conservatory and the French National Conservatory of Music in Paris, Thibault embarked on the international competition circuit and concerts. He has performed more than 1,000 shows on every continent and received recognition by the guitar community and music critics as “the Ambassador of the new classical guitar.” In 2005 he released his third album Bell’Italia, containing pieces of the great Italian composers. His fourth album, N°4, was released in 2009 to great critical acclaim. Cauvin is now releasing Thibault Cauvin Plays Leo Brouwer. The album contains the 30 Estudios Sencillos composed by Leo Brouwer. The Brouwer Estudios has become just as prevalent within the classical guitar community as the great staple of Villa-Lobos preludes and etudes. Together they form the most significant etudes of the twentieth century for classical guitar in their broad scope of technical challenges, a wealth of musical concepts, and pedagogical value.
Bottom Line: Thibault Cauvin Plays Leo Brouwer is a highly musical and stunningly lyrical display from this young guitar virtuoso. Cauvin’s performance is filled with passion, accuracy, and fluidity. Roughly translated, studios Sencillos means ‘simple studies,’ but that is not the case. Brouwer is an incredibly gifted composer, and the details of each piece are endless. The estudios get progressively more challenging, but Cauvin can play all the estudios with the confidence of mastery, which allows him to focus on the nuances. That extra focus is the heart of the success of this gem of a program. “Estudios Sencillos XIV: Allegro” displays Cauvin’s ability to establish a ‘groove,’ and his attention to details in coloring each voice within the moving figures are lovely. His use of dynamics is also excellent in “Estudios Sencillos XX: Introduction, Movido.” All of the technical elements speak evenly and clearly, whether plucked or slurred, each note rings clear to give the composition movement and impact. The recording quality is superb, the guitar is balanced and fills the sonic space evenly. Thibault Cauvin Plays Leo Brouwer will reward guitarists of all genres, and classical music fans will appreciate the fortitude and fluidity of Cauvin’s performances.
